Walk to School Campaign
Walk or cycle to school and help get healthier and fitter, that’s the Government’s message for school children with its Walk to School Campaign.

So Newbold School now has its own School Travel Plan with the aims of improving pupil’s health and fitness by increasing levels of walking and cycling, teaching road and personal safety skills and travel awareness and reducing congestion and pollution outside the school gates.
The Travel Plan:
NEWBOLD’S WALKING BUS is just one of the many objectives successfully achieved by our School Travel Plan committee. Our application to County Hall in 2006 secured a grant of nearly £4000 to help the school children and their families enjoy a healthier and safer way of getting to and from school.

Inside the school grounds we now have a BIKE RACK. This has encouraged many of our older youngsters to cycle to and from school and has proved to be a huge success.

Our SHELTER is used by the children during the day to read books and play games in and many parents and careers use it to keep out of the sun or to dodge the rain!

We have had a special SIGN made to discourage parking on the yellow zigzag lines outside the school, as we feel that parking so close to a blind bend creates a real hazard to our children.

Our 20mph SCHOOL SAFETY ZONE FLASHING LIGHTS have now been installed to encourage drivers to limit their speed to 20 mph as they drive past the school and we hope, through the village.

The Newbold Walking Bus Bus runs every Tuesday and Friday morning.
We have trained volunteers who safely escort the children to school in time for the start of school at 8.50 am.
All the children are issued with reflective jackets on their arrival at one of the scheduled ‘bus stops’.
Which are:
8.25 ................Worthington Lane Bus Shelter
8.30.................Vicarage Close
8.35.................The Cross Keys Car Park
8.40.................Ashby Road at the Jubilee Stone

Our Walking Bus is very popular and has inspired our song;

Walking buses are so cool

We are on our way to school

Michelle and Tracey take us there

Safely down to school with care

Nicola will help us too.

We’ll walk in partners two by two

Walk with us, we won’t be late,

Come rain or shine to the school gate.
